About the CUSP Publication Scheme

The CUSP Publications Scheme (CPS) is a pot of money that can be used for the costs involved in both academic and non-academic publications provided there is a clear research link.

Why is it needed?

The costs of publishing can be prohibitive with the potential for there to be fewer opportunities for arts and social science research to be published.

Who will the CUSP Publication Scheme fund?

Anyone can apply for the fund provided that their publication is CUSP relevant and ODA compliant. There will be a light-touch application process to ensure that the same criteria apply to everyone who applies for the fund. The CPS is open to both academic and non-academic organisations who wish to publish. Work can be published either locally or internationally. As we are bound by the terms and conditions of UKRI all research articles MUST be Open Access within 12 months of publication and include data access statements (even if no data can be used from the article). Please note that, due to the terms of our funding we can only pay open access fees if the publication is led by an LMIC partner.

In the interests of equity, priority will be given to those who may otherwise struggle to get their work published.

Important Information to consider

What will the CUSP Publication Scheme pay for?

The CPS will pay for the costs associated with publishing including:

  • Editing – to ensure that the publication meets professional standards
  • Design – formatting and layout, including illustrations where needed
  • Proofreading
  • Indexing
  • Printing of hard copies
  • Distribution
  • Promotion – digital promotion only. We will not pay for launch events or other events associated with the publication
  • Accessible formats – e.g. braille and audible versions to ensure access for all

As CUSP is funded by the GCRF, via UKRI, all costs must be value for money and ODA compliant (you can find out about ODA rules here). If you believe that there will be costs associated with publishing your work that are not listed above please include these in the Justification of Resources section of your application form.

Please note that both hard and soft copies must be sent and received by CUSP Operations team at the University of Glasgow prior to the final payment being released.

What will the CUSP Publication Scheme NOT pay for?

  • Writing time – due to a modest budget the CPS will not pay for the writers/writing time or any other labour costs involved in the publication. Note that this includes all organising time and any other related administration costs.
  • Institutional Overheads.
  • Open Access costs for articles and journals where the publication is not led by an LMIC partner.

Please note that the CUSP Publication Scheme can only be used for the costs of publication and will NOT pay for the writer’s time.

The Application Form

To apply to the CUSP Publication Scheme, you must complete an application form and budget breakdown form which will include questions such as why this publication is needed, your target audience, who will publish your work and a budget breakdown amongst other things.  The budget breakdown form is where you will input your project costs.

The link to download all the documents needed for an application can be found at the bottom of this page. Please note that you should carefully read the CUSP Publication Scheme Information Pack before completing the application form.
